Molding, Door, and Accent Trim Trends for 2020

Molding, doors, and accent trim are important when crafting the aesthetic of your home. With the new year have come a number of new home accent trends, as well as some older ones that have been revived and modernized. If you’re looking to update your home’s accents this year, read on to see the latest styles designers are recommending.

1. Bold Monochrome Trim

Monochrome trim has dominated homes for the past couple of years, but this has mostly been in white and neutral tones. This year, designers are recommending going bold if you’re going to go with a monochrome look in your homes. This is a great way to work more color into your home and modernize the look of your interior.

2. Contrasting Neutral Walls with Non-Neutral Trim

If you’ve chosen a neutral color for your home’s interior walls, you may want to try something new and select colors that contrast with your neutral walls. This will help your accents stand out and become a more noticeable part of the décor.

3. Natural Wood Trim

Nature-inspired decor is popping up everywhere. You can integrate this trend into your home’s accents by letting the natural wood shine through. You can have your wood trim stained to keep its color or go a shade or two lighter. Then if you have your walls painted a warm and earthy neutral, it will showcase the beauty of the wood tone in your trim.

4. Moody Doors

Designers are moving away from the traditional white and wood doors for your home. According to designer Courtney Hill, “painting an interior door in a rich color adds warmth and character to the space [and] can provide an artistic element for the room.” A non-neutral-colored door can help ground a room, giving it a starting point from which you can add other design elements like wallpaper or multiple colors.

5. Shiplap

With the help of Joanna Gaines, shiplap has become a staple in many homes, especially those with farmhouse decor. Designers are modernizing this 70s style choice by painting it white. With this new approach, the shiplap functions as an interesting way to add texture to a neutral room. You can also have shiplap installed diagonally and in patterns for added interest.

6. Paneled Wainscoting

Wainscoting is a classic trim, popular in colonial and traditional homes. In more modern spaces, wainscoting is virtually nonexistent. However, a great way to update the trend to the modern age is by mixing two trends -- vertical paneling and wainscoting. Installing vertical paneling on the bottom half of your walls is a new and fresh way to update your home.
